Colegiul Național "Ştefan cel Mare" is situated in the North West of the Iași county, which is also known as The Cultural Capital of Romania. The high school bears the name of Stephen the Great (also known as Stephen III), the well-known Prince of Moldavia in recognition of his great deeds.

A public institution with a national interest, Colegiul Național "Ştefan cel Mare" has about 850 pupils enlisted in 29 different classes: 4 for the lower secondary level (from the 5th to the 8th grade) and 25 for the upper secondary level (from the 9th to the 12th grade). The 25 high school classes are divided into three different sections: Sciences ("Mathematics and Computer Programming" and "Earth Studies"), Humanities ("Languages" and "Social Studies") and Economics. Using positive experience and the available resources the high school strives to improve in all three areas.

This educational institution ensures high standards of education and preparation. It aims at developing students’ creativity, their critical thinking, their capacity of assimilating knowledge and at triggering their awareness of social responsibilities.

The high school’s motto is “Maxima debetur puero reverentia”, a Latin phrase literally meaning “We owe the greatest respect to a child”. This short phrase, which is also included on the flag of the high school, summarizes the mission and the orientation of this institution.
